Ash Wednesday |
"Remember,
oh man, that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return"
In a few
minutes we will hear those ancient words of penance in a very
personal way as a priest puts a smudge of dust made in the sign
of a cross on each of our foreheads... |

1st Sunday in Lent |
The lessons
on this first Sunday in Lent have an underlying theme – that
is, there is something basically wrong with humanity. The lessons
also have another underlying theme – that is, God has arranged
a way to fix this brokenness... |

2nd Sunday in Lent |
Many times
while watching a sports event on T.V., particularly an NFL football
game, I have seen the same sign. It usually pops its head up in
the end zone. I'll bet you've seen it too... |

3rd Sunday in Lent |
One of the
dangers of being a Christian is burn-out. We know what we are supposed
to do – we are to share to “good news” of Jesus
Christ as Savior. We even know how we are supposed to do it... |

4th Sunday in Lent |
"Rabbi,
who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
The question
echoes down through the centuries and even now gets mixed up in
Christian theology...

Palm Sunday |
Our Epistle
today is that great passage from Philippians which tells us of Christ’s
“emptying of himself” and coming to earth in human likeness.
In seminary, I have had to write more than one paper on this passage.
It is very important in New Testament theology. “Christology”
is the fancy name for the various theories of what Christ does for
us when he comes to earth... |

Monday in Holy Week |
Today, Monday
in Holy Week, we begin our walk to Calvary with Jesus. The Gospel
today takes us back to events which took place the day before Palm
Sunday, so we know that these events must be important... |

Tuesday in Holy Week |
Jesus’
action in turning over the tables of the money changers in the Temple
seems strangely out of character. It will help us to understand
his actions if we have in our minds a picture of the lay-out of
the Temple precinct... |

Wednesday in Holy Week |
Thank you for
being here today so that we can worship together. This is the faithful
Wednesday group. We gather this day as we do every Wednesday morning
at 10 AM to pray together, pray for others, participate in the formal
“healing service” of our church and celebrate the Eucharist... |

Maundy Thursday |
"I
give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as
I have loved you, you should love one another." (John 13:34)
The year
was 1971. I was a freshman in college. President Nixon had told
the American people that the “end was in sight” for
the Vietnam War; however the war would continue for another four
years... |

Good Friday |
As we experience
the events of Holy Week through the eyes and ears of John, the
Gospeler, we absorb mixed messages.
We see a triumphant
Jesus moving forward without hesitation to meet his tormenters
in the Garden of Gethsemane. When the accusers ask for Jesus of
Nazareth, our Lord answers with a resounding, “I am
He.” His power is so palpable that those who have come
out to arrest him fall to the ground in fright. Power emanates
from him...

Easter Sunday |
Allielulia!
Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed!
Today is
the highlight of our Christian year. Out of the penitential season
of Lent, out of the pain and humiliation and suffering of betrayal,
crucifixion and death comes the sunlight of Easter.
